A science geek is perhaps what one has in mind when one speaks of biotechnology. But what many of us may not know is that the career opportunities in this field are not limited to just doing research in laboratories. Biotechnology offers just as many choices and opportunities as all the other fields have to offer.
Biotechnology is one of the applied science fields that combines both science and engineering principles to a living organism in order to produce a product of interest that is beneficial to the society. Therefore, biotechnology enables a scientist to solve global issues ranging from food security to human and animal diseases.
Why should I take this programme?
Students will be learning from leading researchers in their respective fields and will be equipped with the latest biotechnology knowledge together with extensive hands-on experience in our state-to-the-art facilities in the faculty.
What will I learn?
In the first year of the programme, students will be equipped with fundamental knowledge of biotechnology, for example, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and genetics. This fundamental knowledge is necessary for the students before they enter into their second and third year of study.
Towards the end of the third year of the programme, students will be exposed to the current issues in the area of biotechnology. Students are expected to be able to apply the latest technologies and techniques that they have learned to solve the given issue.
What should I expect?
This field of study offers just as many choices and opportunities as all the other fields have to offer. You will get to find a job that best suits your interest, from working as a researcher in labs to working as an executive in the fast paced business environment. Due to the tremendous support from both the public and private sectors, there is a great emphasis on creating a pool of skilled manpower in this industry.
